What it is
Pole barns use posts set in the ground (or on piers) instead of a full foundation, so they are usually faster and cheaper to build than a regular building. Metal buildings use a steel frame. Both are common for shops, garages, and storage on rural land.
The site needs to be level with good drainage first, so excavation usually comes before the building crew. Ask whether the price includes the site work, the concrete floor, doors, insulation, and electric. Power and water to the barn are usually separate jobs (see Rural Electrical and Rural Plumbing).
The building should be designed for your area's snow and wind loads. Many counties require a permit.

FAQ
Pole barn or steel building?
Pole barns are usually wood posts with metal siding and are often less costly. Steel buildings use a steel frame and can have wider clear spans. Get a quote for each if you are unsure.
Do I need a permit for a pole barn?
Many counties and townships require one, and some have exemptions for farm buildings. Check with your local building or zoning office.
What raises the price most?
Size, a concrete floor, insulation, electric and plumbing, and extra doors or windows. Site prep is often priced separately.
